The Virginia Railway Express (VRE) has a part-time temporary opening for a Facilities Maintenance Assistant position to assist in the coordination and monitoring of contracts for facilities maintenance, custodial, snow/ice removal, and miscellaneous contracts for services performed at VRE stations, executive offices, and other facilities.
The Facilities Maintenance Assistant will:
Attend field meetings with contractors and utility staff to coordinate, oversee, and monitor work in progress and completed work Respond to emergencies and oversee and inspect snow and ice removal Perform periodic inspections of stations, offices, and other facilities Provide general administrative and operational support to the Facilities Maintenance department including performing data entry, preparing requisitions, making minor purchases, and communicating orally and in writing with VRE employees and contractor staff While this position is temporary, it could provide the opportunity to showcase your skills and get a foot in the door at a great place to work! It offers a competitive hourly rate ($33 - $48 per hour) based on the experience and credentials of the successful candidate.
Benefits and paid time off are not included with temporary employment; however, free transportation on VRE is provided.
Position is authorized for 30 hours per week for a period not to exceed twelve (12) months, but subject to renewal based on business need and available funding.
The successful candidate will possess:
Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities Minimum Knowledge of facilities-related building, equipment, grounds, and systems maintenance and repair practices and procedures Knowledge of general business management, vendor management, and customer service principles, and best practices Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills Skilled in conflict management and resolving challenges in a positive and constructive manner, minimizing negative impact Proficiency using computer technology and systems, and tools to include Microsoft Office and Outlook Solid organizational skills and ability to be flexible and adaptable in responding to new information, changing conditions, and/or unexpected obstacles in a fast-paced environment Professionalism and skill in dealing effectively with diverse individuals at all levels of the organization, as well as with external stakeholders and customers Ability to understand service contract terms and conditions and evaluation performance based on observation Ability to prioritize and assign work Ability to develop, evaluate, recommend, and implement processes and procedures that contribute to organizational and operational effectiveness and efficiency Ability to apply critical thinking using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths/weaknesses of alternative solutions and approaches to problems Ability to handle stress, maintain an even temperament and demonstrate confidence when making decisions in the best interest of the passenger, VRE and the railroads Minimum and Preferred Qualifications & Experience Associates degree in Project or Construction Management of related technical field Experience in facilities management, construction, engineering, or a relevant building trade Additional directly related experience may be substituted for the educational requirement Experience in transit and/or rail operations preferred Additional Requirements Must possess a valid driver's license, current auto insurance, and always maintain a safe driving record during employment with VRE Ability to work the flexible hours demanded by a transit operation environment For consideration, qualified applicants must apply through the VRE Career Center and submit a resume detailing knowledge, skills, abilities, experience, and education.
