Inova Mount Vernon Hospital is proud of its experienced, professional, and compassionate surgical team. With nearly 7,000 surgical procedures performed each year both inpatient and outpatient our surgical suite staff delivers the highest quality of patient care. Consisting of 8 ORs we support surgeries in general, neuro, plastics, vascular, orthopedics, and ENT, using our state-of-the-art equipment, DaVinci Xi. The OR functions 24/7 with the support of call teams on off-shifts and holidays. It is a fast-paced environment that focuses on strong teamwork and patient safety. This position is eligible for a $10,000 sign-on bonus and relocation assistance.
The Surgical Technologist 1 performs and/or provides scrub assistance during procedures that reflect an awareness of anatomy, necessary principles, skills, supplies, and adequate knowledge base. Can demonstrate knowledge and practice of basic patient care concepts and surgical case preparation skills. Demonstrates the ability to perform the role of the first scrub on all basic surgical cases.
- Assists the circulating nurse in implementing the perioperative plan of care to include patient positioning, confirmation/preparation of the operative site, updating physician preference card, care of operative specimens, and room turnover.
- Identifies factors relative to the patient's age and developmental stage that must be considered during the surgical procedure.
- Assists with pulling cases and checks case carts for completeness, obtain supplies and equipment and determines them to be in good working order before a case begins.
- Prepares the operating room by opening sterile supplies, instruments, and sutures based on the scheduled procedure and surgeon preference card.
- Follows policies for scrubbing, gowning, gloving, setting up the back table, draping, and counting with the circulating nurse.
- Exercises care in the operation and use of instruments/equipment/ and reports/follow the appropriate procedure for broken items.
- Follows OSHA and hospital infection control policies at all times.
- Anticipates the needs of the surgeon, which includes passing instruments, sutures, and other items appropriate to the procedure.
- Establishes and maintains an organized sterile field. Adheres to unit specific standards, policies, and procedures for aseptic technique.
- Selects proper sterilization method of instruments/equipment; sterilizes before procedures, as necessary, and verifies instruments as sterile.
- Takes corrective action when any unsafe practice, conditions, or breaks in aseptic technique occur and report information to the circulating nurse.
Position Requirements:
- Required Education: High School Diploma or GED - Preferred Education: Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program. If no surgical technologist experience, then must have graduated within the last year.

Experience: Recent Hospital experience and/or previous practice experience.
- Required Certification/License: - Surgical Technologist registration required - Must be eligible for Surgical Technologist registration via Commonwealth of Virginia at time of hire. Registration must be completed within 6 months of hire.
- BLS via AHA required
- Preferred Certification/License: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) via NBSTSA or Tech in Surgery Certified (TS-C) via NCCT
